Detour For Emmy
By
Marilyn Reynolds
Detour For Emmy, by Marilyn Reynolds is a novel about a young girl, Emmy, who becomes pregnant when she is only fifteen years old. Written in 1993, Detour for Emmy is a nonfiction book that appeals to the teenage audience. The book is only 255 pages long so that makes it an easy read. Detour For Emmy, is written in a way that makes it easy to understand. I would recommend this book for anyone ages from junior high to high school.
The setting is in Los Angeles, California. Much of the book takes place during school hours and is what high school life is really like. The novel begins with three typical 8th grade girls talking about going to Hamilton Heights High School. They are excited for school to start and giggle about meeting the boys. Emmy lives with her mother and her brother. Her mother is always out working late, never at home and when she is home, she’s usually drunk. David, her brother, who is constantly fighting with their mom is causing trouble at home. Emmy and David are very close to each other. Emmy is home alone often. Coming from a broken family, Emmy is still a stable kid. She is very smart and gets good grades in school. The only person, other than her brother David, Emmy respects and is close to, was her grandma who passed away several years ago.
Hamilton High School is where Emmy meets Art Rodriguez. Art Rodriguez is one year ahead of Emmy in school. When she first sees him in the hall she thinks he is really cute. On Emmy’s birthday Art wished her a happy birthday. When Valentine's Day arrived Art invited Emmy to come to a party with him that was at his best friend Bobby’s house. Emmy accepted Art’s invitation to the party. After that Art and Emmy became boyfriend and girlfriend. Emmy believed that she was in love with Art. He was older than she was and he made her feel special. After a short time, Art started asking Emmy about having sex. At first she said she wasn’t ready but eventually gave in to Art. Emmy and Art tried to practice safe sex, using condoms and foam. One evening when they were at the beach Art wanted to have sex. They didn’t have any condoms but they decided to have sex anyway. Art promised Amy that he would “pull out” before he had an orgasim.
She mentioned to Art that she was late for her period. He said it was impossible for her to get pregnant because pulling out was as safe as a condom except for the diseases. Then one morning she woke up feeling queasy and she started feeling sick all the time. Emmy went to the drugstore and bought a pregnancy test.It came up positive and she told Art she was pregnant. Art was angry and accused her of getting pregnant by someone else and thought she was trying to trap him. Art told Emmy they couldn’t be together until she fixed her “problem” so they broke up.
Tammy was the only one that was still there for her. Her brother David was arrested because of some warrants he had, so he couldn’t be there for Emmy. Art started dating another girl named Amy. All her teachers who once admired her now didn’t recognize her as that bright Emmy they once did. Her mom had never been there for her. Emmy and her mom tried getting along for the baby. The Barb began staying home more and drinking less, until the day Emmy went into labor, her mother was nowhere to be found. No one was there to take her to the hospital. Emmy had to call Tammy and make her take her parents car while they were out of town. Tammy dropped her off but had to go. No one was with her while she delivered and she felt neglected. Emmy’s mom didn’t show up until the next morning.
However that did not matter anymore because now Emmy was not alone. She had a baby that needed her and someone who would love her back with no conditions. Emmy loved Rosemary . After three weeks Art had finally called Emmy, he had barely found out that Emmy had given birth to little Rosemary. Emmy felt disappointed with how long it had taken him to call, once they were talking she had a flashback to when Art told her he wanted nothing to do with the baby and Emmy until she got rid of her problem.
Time went by and Emmy was raising Rosemary all by herself. One day Tammy convinced Emmy to go out on a double date with her and her boyfriend Bobby, and her cousin Brad. Emmy’s mom had surprisingly given her permission to go. She new Emmy needed a break from being a mom. They went out and danced until it was time to drop off Tammy. While they were at the dance, Brad tried to get them to drink with him. By the end of the night Brad was drunk. Later on that night when Tammy and Bobby wanted to be alone, Brad and Emmy stayed in the car to wait for them. Brad started trying to make out and feel Emmy up, giving signals that he wanted to have sex. She refused and he got more aggressive. Brad started forcing himself on her. Emmy gouged at his eyes, and kicked until she got the car door open and tried to escape. When Emmy got away from Brad she started running as fast as she could toward home. In an instant L.A police pulled up behind her, shouting “STOP!” “put your hands up!” She came to a halt, cooperating with the police, she let them take her home. The barb, Emmy, and the police sat down for a talk. Everyone asking Emmy what had happened, she refused to tell on Brad for what he had done. Tammy and Bobby stopped by about eight in the morning still in the same clothes they’d worn to the Rave. Tammy was angry because Emmy had injured Brad, until Emmy explained the entire situation. Tammy didn’t believe Emmy until she showed all her bruised areas around her pelvic bone. Tammy apologized. While Bobby was changing Rosie’s diaper and Emmy came to help. He saw Rosie’s butt mole and Emmy told them that it’s identical to Art’s butt mole. Emmy got upset because Bobby and Tammy still thought that Art may not be Rosie’s father. A couple days passed and Emmy decided to call Art and asked him if he could come by the house before he left to college. Art agreed and they meet at Emmy’s house. Art was telling Emmy how his life changed because he was going to college in six days and had never been away from his parents that long. After a while of talking Emmy asked Art if he could sit with Rosie for a minute while she went to get a fresh diaper for Rosie Dee. As Emmy walked out she saw Rosie was kicking and smiling at Art and he was smiling back at her. Emmy said time to changed Rosie Dee’s diaper she position her where Art could have a better view of the left side of Rosie’s butt. She asked Art what he thought of Rosie’s look-alike mole. He said nothing trying to re-focus his eyes. She asked again, that’s when he replied, gently saying I know what it is and repeated it again reassuring the both of them. Emmy then handed Rosie to Art. He held her unsure he was doing it right. Emmy told him he was holding her just fine. Art mentioned he was going to Stanford, then went right back into talking about Rosie. He felt ashamed of abandoning her, is what he communicated with her. They sat and played with Rosie until dark, til Art had to return home. Before he left he asked if he could come back tomorrow, Emmy agreed. The next day Emmy woke up, re-living her and Arts past. Art called and said he was off work and would be over in 20 minutes. When he arrived he had a large pizza in his hands- Emmy’s favorite kind. After they ate Emmy gave Rosie a bath in the sink, Art thought that was weird. He asked to use her phone and she of course, said yes. Emmy overheard him explaining to his mom he was going to be home late. As soon as Rosie fell asleep, they grabbed a comforter and went outside to lay it down. Art asked Emmy if she wanted to try dating each other again. Just as they were about to interact in intercourse Rosie cried. Emmy ran in to take care of Rosie’s needs.

The Shining Novel vs Movie
Stephen King’s horror novel; The Shining is very different in quite a few ways compared to movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. I personally enjoyed the novel way better vs the movie.
The plot in the movie and book were pretty similar to each other, however in the book, Stephen King really describes what the hotel looks like and the hedges and other surrounding areas. In the movie, the hedges didn’t even exist, only the maze did. I really think the hedges should have been included in the movie because they were such a huge part of the book. In the beginning of the film, the manager tells Jack all about the history and Grady. In the book the manager doesn’t say anything to Jack about it until Jack finds the scrapbook in the basement and calls him. This kind of messes with the plot already at the beginning because in the movie Jack finds out about it right away and it takes a little while before he finds out what happened in the book.
“Tony” was completely different in the movie vs the book. In the book, Danny sees these hallucinations and sees these thing that Tony is showing him. In the movie, Tony is this thing on Danny’s finger and tells him stuff. It was really confusing at first to understand that was Tony. On the other hand, when Tony shows Danny the blood bursting out of the main doors in the hotel in the movie it happens almost right away, in the book it was not suppose to happen like that or right away.
The two little girls, known as Grady’s daughter played a huge part and role in the movie, but in the book they were never seen at all. The girls were talked about a few times in the novel, but in the movie they seemed to play such an important part. Especially considering the fact the Danny sees and ‘runs across’ them several times throughout the movie.
Some other differences between the movie and novel were; in the movie Jack kissed dead and naked lady who seemed to be gorgeous and very attractive to him at first. In the movie he never kissed her and she didn’t turn into being younger either. Another difference was the movie used a snowcat and the book had snowmobile. In addition to that, the doctor who came to see Danny in the movie was a female and in the book it was a male and they took him to the doctor’s office instead of their house.
There are so many differences and so few similarities between the book and novel. Some people like the movie way better, but I personally side with the novel because it is the true horror and thriller story of The Shining.
